Anna Sacks who goes by the handle @TheTrashWalker uses her social media platform, including videos on TikTok to raise awareness about the usable goods thrown away by large retailers in New York City. Reports indicate that Sacks has saved thousands of dollars worth of goods which are often donated to the needy.
The beauty of Sack’s activism is that it sheds a light on the consumer based culture in trash filled NYC. Anyone who’s ever walked NYC streets — particularly if they’re from the midwest — is immediately shocked by the public garbage bags brazenly left on the street. In typical midwestern states like Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Iowa this would be unconscionable. Even some of the largest cities like Minneapolis would never allow such large trash dumping or would they?
Target, General Mills, SuperValu, and Cargill are Minneapolis corporations who could benefit the most from adopting policies consistent with retaining usable goods if they don’t already.
